Daily Check-Ins for House Sitting: What They Are and Why They Matter

Daily check-ins are SitSignal’s structured once-per-day update for house sitting stays.

They are designed to give pet parents a clear, organized snapshot of the day while helping sitters stay consistent, accountable, and professional during longer bookings.

Instead of a vague text like “everything’s good,” daily check-ins combine pet updates, home status, tasks, and photos into one clear report.

What Is a Daily Check-In?

A daily check-in is a structured daily report completed by the sitter during a house sitting stay.

Each check-in provides a full overview of:

  • How each pet is doing
  • What care was completed
  • The condition of the home
  • Any important notes for the client

The result is a more transparent and reliable house sitting experience for both sides.

What’s Included in a Daily Check-In?

Each daily check-in includes four main sections:

1. Per-Pet Updates

Sitters complete an update for each pet.

  • Whether the pet was seen
  • Mood and behavior
  • Meals and water
  • Potty status
  • Medication (if applicable)
  • Notes
  • At least one photo per pet

2. Activity & Care

  • Walks completed (number and duration)
  • Playtime
  • Time pets were left alone
  • Training notes or behavior changes

3. Home Status

  • Doors secured
  • Lights checked
  • Thermostat status

If needed, sitters can also report home issues with:

  • Category
  • Description
  • Photos

If the House Profile includes responsibilities, those can also be tracked:

  • Mail pickup
  • Trash & recycling
  • Plant care
  • Packages
  • Custom home tasks

4. Client Summary

  • Overall daily summary
  • Notes for the next day
  • Whether a response is needed

For Pet Parents: Why This Matters

Daily check-ins give you peace of mind while you’re away.

  • See how your pets are doing every day
  • Confirm care is being completed
  • Stay informed about your home
  • Receive photos and updates in one place

Instead of wondering how things are going, you’ll have a clear daily snapshot.

For Sitters: Why This Matters

Daily check-ins help you deliver a more professional and consistent service.

  • Keep your updates structured and complete
  • Show clients the care you’re providing
  • Reduce misunderstandings
  • Create a record of your work
  • Increase trust, reviews, and tips

They’re one of the easiest ways to stand out as a high-quality sitter.

Important: Daily Check-Ins Are Not a Replacement for Messaging

Daily check-ins are part of communication — not the only communication.

  • Respond to messages promptly
  • Send extra photos when appropriate
  • Communicate immediately if something is urgent

The best experiences combine daily reports and ongoing communication.

If There’s an Issue Submitting a Check-In

If a sitter cannot submit a daily check-in:

  • Notify the client right away
  • Send photos and updates directly
  • Contact SitSignal Support

Communication should always continue, even if the report system has an issue.

Important Timing Rule

Daily check-ins must be completed within the same calendar day. Once it passes midnight, that day’s check-in is missed.

Sitters should complete their daily check-in before the end of the day. For best results, we recommend submitting it between 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM so clients receive a consistent, evening update.

Best Practices

  • Complete the check-in daily (before midnight)
  • Include clear photos of each pet
  • Write a helpful summary (not just “all good”)
  • Continue messaging outside the report when needed
  • Communicate early if something goes wrong

Final Thoughts

Daily check-ins are the accountability layer of house sitting on SitSignal.

They bring structure for sitters and peace of mind for pet parents.

When combined with strong communication and photos, they create a smoother, more transparent, and more professional experience for everyone.
